Q: When should I use cold versus heat?

A: Use cold therapy for acute injuries during the first 48 to 72 hours - sprains, strains, bumps, and swelling. Cold reduces inflammation and numbs pain. Use heat therapy for chronic conditions - muscle stiffness, back pain, and tension. Never apply heat to an acute injury as it can increase swelling.

Q: Can I apply ice directly to skin?

A: No. Always wrap ice packs, cold packs, and frozen gel packs in a thin cloth or bandage before applying to skin. Direct contact can cause cold burns, particularly on sensitive skin. Apply through a barrier for 15 to 20 minutes, then remove and allow the skin to return to normal temperature.
