How does the SWAT-T work differently from a windlass tourniquet?
Traditional windlass tourniquets use a rod that is twisted to tighten a band around the limb. The SWAT-T uses a stretch-wrap-and-tuck mechanism - the elastic band is stretched to a specific tension (indicated by printed diamonds that change shape), wrapped around the limb, and tucked to secure. This provides arterial occlusion through elastic compression rather than mechanical windlass tightening.
Can the SWAT-T be used on children?
Yes. The elastic stretch mechanism accommodates a wider range of limb sizes than rigid windlass tourniquets, making the SWAT-T effective on paediatric limbs as well as adult limbs. The elastic tension adjusts naturally to the circumference, which is an advantage when treating casualties of varying size.
